Today our staff and students had the opportunity to see "Tales of Spain" at Miller Auditorium thanks to the generosity of Education for the Arts. This program explored the classical, regional and flamenco dances of Spain. We learned about the development of music and dance in Spain, the influence of other cultures on Spanish dancing styles, and about flamenco guitars, singing and movement. Afterwards we went out to lunch as a group on our way back to school. Thanks to Borgess Health System's Think First program, Gateway students had the opportunity to see how distractions in the car can lead to accidents on the roadway. The Think First program brought in a distracted driving simulator which each of the students had the chance to use. Only one of our students was able to complete the course, but only because he ignored all the distractions. Thank you, Borgess! Today we celebrated Thanksgiving. We roasted turkeys, made pies and a had a baked potato bar. We also shared what we are thankful for and told each other what we appreciate about them. We had a special slide show for Mrs. Walker. Please use the link to see our slide show for Mrs. Walker. Click Present, then enter to change the slide.
Many thanks are sent out to Mr. Steve Lambert for coming in to teach our students about car care. Many students were able to learn about how to take care of their cars and be more confident in their skills.
Thanks to a very generous benefactor, the students and staff had the opportunity to spend a day at the Sherman Lake YMCA. While we had fun on the Climbing Wall and the Giant Swing, we learned lessons on trust, sharing, encouragement and respect. This was an amazing day of self-discovery, challenging ourselves and teamwork. This was truly a life changing day for many of our students. On November 29, we will be attending the 10 am performance of Ensemble Espanol. We will be stopping for lunch on the way back to school. Please be sure to bring funds to cover the cost of your lunch. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend, please be sure to register at the following link:
Today we had a special visit from Keith Hall and some of his friends who performed a variety of jazz songs for us. In addition, we learned about the jazz genre and how a jazz performance is developed. The best part was the audience participation. Our drumming class was able to participate in one of the songs in a very interactive way. We hope you enjoy the video. If you would like to know more about Keith Hall and his work, please use the link below. Today we welcomed a speaker from Borgess Health who talked to us about making good choices and our health, especially in relation to head injuries. We also welcomed Trevor Rhoda who talked to us about his head injuries and how it has affected his life. Trevor made a big impression on our students with his story, humor, and determination. Thank you, Borgess Health for making this possible.
Our Fall conference schedule has been posted. Please use the following link to sign up for your conference. If none of the scheduled times work for you, please call Mrs. Walker.
