FRiday Reports
Happy Friday! Mrs. Walker is out for the day, so I am filling in.
There have been a lot of germs being passed around our community lately. We have had out building disinfected, but we would like to get through to Thanksgiving without too many absences. If your child has a fever, consider keeping them home, if you are not sure, call Lynette for her opinion. Also, remember to encourage everyone to wash their hands. This is the best way to keep healthy. On Monday, November 7, we will be spending the day at Sherman Lake YMCA. We will be leaving the school promptly at 7:40 am, so be sure your student is on time on Monday. They should also be prepared to be outside, so remind them to wear a jacket. We will be eating lunch at the Y and will be back in time to get on the busses. Wednesday is an early release day. Student will be released at 1pm. If they would like to stay to work later, they need to have their own transportation home. Please be sure to check out our webpage for more information, including info on an upcoming field trip. http://gatewayacademy.weebly.com/ Don’t forget to ask your student for his/her progress reports. They are going home today. Have a great weekend!

We've had a pretty busy week, which is probably why progress report don't look that great for most of the kids. There wasn't school Friday; we had speakers from Borgess on Monday; art class Tuesday; Jazz concert Wednesday; counseling and Sherman Lake Thursday. Today, a group of kids are at the Gospel Mission. I don't give homework as students know what needs to be done for them to graduate. Many of them should be working outside of class so they can stay on track.
Don't forget that Monday, all students should go to the Middle School before coming to Gateway. We will have free vision screening available for all students. Students that ride the bus will be dropped of there and then taken to Gateway. Today, I gave students a permission form for listening to music next week. If you're ok with your child listening during the day, please sign. I am also attaching the form here so if it's lost, you can print another one. At one point today, all three teachers will be out of the building, so we have a substitute. Students are expected to behave appropriately so that Mr. Lambert will come back another time. Although Monday is Halloween, students are not permitted to dress up. I hope you all have a great weekend! We won't even talk about the football rankings as it's too depressing. Edited to add: The football rankings are almost perfect. If only someone would take out Alabama. Since I've seen most of you for conferences, there's not a whole lot to say.
Just want to inform you of some upcoming events: No school tomorrow. Students that would like additional class time may set up arrangements to come in for part of the day. Monday, speakers from Borgess Hospital's Think First Program will be here at 1:00 to address brain and spinal cord injuries. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend. Wednesday, Keith Hall ( http://www.keithhallmusic.com/about/bio/ ) will be bringing a keyboard, bass, and trumpet player as well as a singer with him. His quintet is made up of professional musicians working and studying in the Kalamazoo area. They will be preforming from 11:30-12:30. Parents and siblings are invited. Thursday, students will be visiting Sherman Lake and Friday will have students at the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. Monday, October 31, Gateway students will have the opportunity to have their vision screened. This will take place at the MIDDLE SCHOOL, FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. All students need to go to the MS before coming to Gateway. Students who drive should come to the MS, do the screening, then drive to Gateway. Parents that drop off students should drop them off at the MS; we will have a bus bring all students to Gateway after the screening is completed. Thank you attending conferences, I always love meeting with you. I will be at the school tomorrow if you weren't able to come in this week....sign up on the conference sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sh3EDDgpk-vAIV27KvXdH6ZcXUAzgErFhNTZQtx_bXU/edit#gid=7 The PSAT pre-id is Monday morning for all juniors. Juniors will need an id, calculator, and a pencil. The PSAT test will be Wednesday at 8:00 sharp. The purpose of the PSAT is to ready juniors for the SAT which will be taken in the spring. For more information, see attachment. Scores from the SAT will be sent to colleges and may be used to determine acceptance.
School will be normal for everyone else on Mon & Wed and all students are expected to attend. Conferences already started but it's not too late to sign up. Please look at the day/times available and sign up for your child's conference. Students are welcome to attend but are not required to. I really enjoy conferences as it gives me time talk about how wonderful your kids are :) http://gatewayacademy.weebly.com/ Upcoming events: Next Friday, October 21, students do not have school but if your child would like extra time on the computer, have him/her contact me and see about coming in for part of the day. Monday, October 24, we are having speakers from Borgess Hospital's Think First program coming at 1:00 to address brain and spinal cord injuries. Parents are welcome to addend. Wednesday, October 26, Jazz musician Keith Hall will give a performance from 12:30-1:30. Parents and siblings are encouraged to join us. Progress reports will be handed out at your conference and will not be send home today. Hello All!
Another week down. No clowns here...except for the staff :) We survived count day (thank you for making sure your kids were here) and all the events we scheduled. It doesn't seem like we will be slowing down anytime soon. Next week: Monday, students will be volunteering at the SPCA (Animal shelter) and Wednesday students will be working with their third grade book buddies and fifth grade science buddies at the Ryan. Friday finds us going back to Sherman Lake YMCA: please make sure your child has the proper clothing and shoes if he/she is participating. Conferences will be held October 14, 19-21. Please sign up online for a day/time that works for your schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sh3EDDgpk-vAIV27KvXdH6ZcXUAzgErFhNTZQtx_bXU/edit?ts=57f642a1#gid=7 If there is nothing available that works for you, we can schedule a different week or plan a phone conference. I hope you all have a great weekend! Go Ohio State :) Well, we made it another week!
I have been very impressed with the progress of many of the students. You will be able to see your child's progress on the progress report we are sending home. Keep in mind that progress reports are never 100% accurate as we have classes that have sections taken out based upon pretesting scores. For example, if Sally pretested out of 20% of her class, the first week she worked in the class will show that 20% as work completed when in reality, it was taken out. Over time, the reports will become more accurate. If you need clarification, please call or email Mrs. Wilga (548-3426 or [email protected]). Next Monday is picture day. Students are not obligated to purchase anything to receive id's. Also on Monday, Mrs. Wilga and I will be going to the Sherman Lake YMCA after school and any student that would like to go with us is welcome to (as long as we have room in our cars). The cost is $5 per person/visit. Students are responsible for their own rides home. (Just a note...this is half of what it normally costs to visit. I am extremely appreciative of the Y to extent such a discount to our staff and students!) Tuesday we start art class for those who need fine art/visual credit to graduate. Wednesday at 12:30 we are extremely excited to present the Bird of Prey program to our students and family/friends. Check out their website for more information: http://www.raptorcenter.org/programs.asp Thursday we will be taking those interested to the SPCA and we also have counseling. Friday students in our technology group will be returning to the Richland Area Community Center to assist those technologically challenged :) As you can see, our days are becoming filled. It is so important for students to be here every day so they can benefit from all the services we offer. In addition, attendance matters....I mean, does your boss mind if you miss multiple days of work? If we are to prepare students for life after high school, then it's time we let them know the expectations they will be facing. Have a great weekend and don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance. Happy Friday!!!
Four days down, only 176 left to go. Many papers were sent home this week and I need to get them back asap....especially the ones that go to food services. The kids and staff are settling in and finding rhythm in our days. Today, we had a group go to the Richland Area Community Center (RACC): Nick, Michael, Austin, Kayla, Rhett, and Dwight. I heard that they did an incredible job and I'm really proud of them. We will have pictures on our website as soon as Mrs. Wilga has time to post them. Upcoming events include: school pictures on the 19th, art class starting on the 20th, the Bird of Prey Raptor Program visiting our school on the 21st at 12:30 (parents and siblings are invited to attend. Art class will be starting), and will will continue to have counseling on Thursdays. Thank you for trusting us with your child. We will do our best to meet his/her needs. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance. Lynnette Walker Gull Lake Gateway Academy 269-548-3425 Education is Never as Expensive as Ignorance Thank you all for coming to conferences! I'm already excited to start planning for the fall. Please know that I am available during the summer if you need anything. My number is: 269-501-1422.
Monday is our last full day, and we are having a potluck luncheon. Staff is bringing hamburgers and buns. Please ask your child what he/she signed up to bring. Progress reports will be sent home today. These are the final reports for this school year. Remember that all paperwork must be returned by Wednesday to guarantee a spot for the fall. Progress reports will be given out during conferences and not sent home today.
Graduation is behind us....check out the pictures and slide show on our website: http://gatewayacademy.weebly.com/ We are having a potluck on the 13th and will have a signup for the kids to bring sides. Gateway will be providing hamburgers. The 14th and 15th are half days: students are dismissed at 10:50. I don't have anything else to add since I will be seeing all of you today or next week. Have a great weekend. It's been a really busy week. State Trooper Kristy Angelo came on Monday and talked about sexting and cyber bullying. She challenged us to think before posting and to know that there can be long lasting consequences for sharing too much personal information. On Monday, we also had our ground breaking. It is very exciting to see the property getting ready to be built upon.
Our salmon were released on Wednesday....now if we could just get the fish smell out of my office!! Today finds students teaching technology to Richland's older generation at the RACC. We have one more visit planned for next month, then we will start again in the fall. Graduation is fast approaching....only 12 more days. Students will receive caps and gowns at rehearsal on May 31, 2:30, at the middle school. Rehearsal lasts until everyone knows where to go and can follow directions (which means we will probably be there all night :) Remember to sign up for a conference if you would like for you child to return next year. Here is the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sh3EDDgpk-vAIV27KvXdH6ZcXUAzgErFhNTZQtx_bXU/edit#gid=7 Students are assessed on attendance, attitude, and academic achievement to determine next year's placement. Students not eligible to return will be assisted in finding another school. Progress reports will be sent home today. Keep in mind that we had many activities going on this week that may have taken up your child's time. |
